The Vidor Pirates celebrated homecoming with its “lights out” half-time extravaganza and a win on the field over the Baytown Lee Ganders to keep its hopes for a trip to the playoffs alive for another week.
Vidor defeated Baytown Lee 19-7 on Friday night by utilizing running backs Zach Seigrist and Brad Nunez, and a smothering defense which kept a potent Ganders passing game in check much of the night.
The Pirates offense struck first with a nine play, 62-yard scoring drive courtesy of a Seigrist 12-yard zip around the end for a quick 7-0 lead while using just 4:16 of game clock.
On the ensuing drive, the Ganders only needed four plays and 99 seconds to move the ball 67 yards for the touchdown as quarterback Ijenea Wooley found receiver Elijah Partida open near the left pylon for a 5-yard scoring pass to even the game, 7-7.
The Pirates started the next possession at its own 24-yard line and needed just two plays to score. Brad Nunez took a handoff around the left sideline and zipped 46 yards to the Ganders 30 yard line. On the very next play, Nunez again carried left and surged through a host of defenders at the goal line for the score and 14-7 Vidor lead after the Danny Lee extra point with 5:30 left in the opening quarter.
The game had the appearance of a shootout about to take place, but both defenses stepped up at this point and neither offense could find the end zone again.
Vidor threatened several times as the offense reached the red zone on three different possession, but one drive stalled out on penalties and a turnover on downs, another ended with a missed 26-yard field goal attempt and the third stalled following a fumble at the 13-yard line.
The Pirates offense chewed up the clock in the fourth quarter on a five-minute drive which ended with a Danny Lee 25-yard field goal to extend the Vidor lead, 17-7.
On the next Ganders possession, the Vidor defense forced Baytown Lee to punt following what appeared to be a three-and-out, but the snap went over the punter’s head at the goal line and rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety to help seal the homecoming win for the Pirates, 19-7.
Vidor (4-4, 3-3) hits the road for its final game of district as the Pirates face the Dayton Broncos (1-8, 0-6). Baytown Lee (5-4, 2-4) will host the Crosby Cougars (4-4, 4-2). Vidor will need to win next week and have Crosby lose to Baytown Lee to squeeze into the playoffs.
