Verna Glee Aldrich Evans entered heaven on June 3, 2025, at the age of 95.
Born in 1929 in Beaumont, Texas, she graduated from French High School in 1947 and later attended Chenier Business School. She married the love of her life, James Leroy Evans, on May 2, 1953. They were married for 60 wonderful years.
Verna began her long career as a legal secretary at Orgain, Bell & Tucker in 1949. After taking time off to raise her children, she returned to her profession around 1969 and faithfully served for more than 30 years.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Beaumont, where she joyfully served as a teacher for Girls in Action (GAs), children’s Sunday School, singles, and senior adult ladies. She later sang in the choir at First Baptist Church of Bevel Oaks and loved lifting her voice in praise.
In 2006, Verna and Leroy moved to Ridgeland, Mississippi, where they found community at Colonial Heights Baptist Church. There, Verna remained an active part of the senior adult department.
She was a devoted student of the Bible and a passionate letter writer who cherished keeping in touch with friends and family. Verna loved to cook, manage her home with excellence, and bless her grandchildren with reading time, fun projects, and warm hugs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Leroy Evans; her brother, John Leonard Aldrich; and her granddaughter, Laura Kay Shepherd.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Linda Evans Shepherd (Paul Shepherd) of Longmont, Colorado; her son, Jimmy Evans (Mary) of Jackson, Mississippi; her sister, Sue Stringer of Evadale, Texas; and grandchildren Jim Shepherd, Elizabeth Evans Wilson (Ben), and J.T. Evans.
