An Orange County family is finally getting some closure after a man wanted for nearly three decades in the 1997 killing of his wife has been arrested.
Rogelio Guerra Vasquez, 68, was caught Wednesday morning in Mexico, according to a Facebook post from his daughter, Emily Ross. The news was given to Ross just a day after she told her mothers story at the Orange Rotary Club as October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Orange County District Attorney Krispen Winfree confirmed Vasquez was arrested in connection with the May 16, 1997 murder of his wife, Sugie Vasquez.
Ross, who was just 14 years old when her mother was killed, said this was the first time in 29 years she was able to sleep without a night light because she finally knew where her father was.
He was charged with murder, and the 163rd District Court in Orange County issued a state arrest warrant on July 10th of that year.
On June 12th, 2006, a federal warrant was issued charging Vasquez with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, according to Winfree.
The FBI’s Houston office had listed Vasquez as a fugitive and offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
