On Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 6:17 p.m., the Newton County Sheriff’s Office was advised of two missing juveniles off Sheppard Road (CR 3114) just north of the Waste Management Landfill.
Upon arrival, the preliminary investigation indicated the juveniles has been playing in the woods and became lost around dark. Deputies began searching the woods and nearby roadways but were unable to locate the missing juveniles. Assistance was then requested and received by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, who sent their helicopter and began searching with a FLIR.
At 12:36 a.m., the Jefferson County Helicopter Pilots reported they had located the juveniles and communicated with Newton County Deputies and citizens to guide them to the children’s location in the woods. The children were located and safely returned to family members.
Sheriff Colton Havard thanks the Newton Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the group of citizens that helped in the search and rescue efforts.
