Mustangs Lose First District Game
SILS 0 1 0 0 1 0 1- 3
WOS 0 0 1 0 1 0 0- 2
The district race got tighter Tuesday night. The Silsbee Tigers went into Ronnie Anderson Park and handed the West Orange-Stark Mustangs their first district loss 3-2. The game marks the end of the first half of district play.
The Tigers got a strong pitching performance from Chase Partain to earn the victory. Partain pitched a five-hitter and struck out 11 Mustangs in the complete game win for Silsbee.
Jack Dallas was equally effective for the Mustangs on the mound also allowing only five hits while striking out 10 Tigers. Dallas’ undoing was some sloppy fielding by West Orange-Stark. Two of the three runs allowed by Jack were unearned.
Silsbee scored first in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Trevis Sundgren reached first base when he swung and missed on strike three, but the ball got away from the catcher. Sundgren went to second on a wild pitch. Jacob Collins bunted to the left of the mound. Dallas tried to make an acrobatic play, but bobbled the ball for an error putting Tigers at first and third.
A double steal by the Tigers got them a run. As Collins took off for a steal of second base the throw from the catcher was cut off, but the relay home was high allowing Sundgren to score easily. Dallas prevented further damage with a great play on a comebacker to just nip Noah Bayless at first base.
In the bottom of the third the Mustangs tied the game. Payton Robertson beat out a grounder to shortstop with one out. K. J. Miller was then hit by a pitch in the right hand. The injury was serious enough for Miller to be taken out of the game. It was reported he was taken for X-Rays and treatment on the knuckle of his right thumb. He’s expected to miss significant time.
Dallas was up after Miller and hit a bouncer to third on which the Tigers tried to turn two. They got the force out at second on the pinch runner for Miller, but the relay was late to first base allowing Dallas to reach on the fielder’s choice. Hustling Robertson never hesitated and raced home to score making it all the way from second on the play.
Two innings later Silsbee regained the lead. Mason Youngblood led off the inning with a single to right. He was sacrificed to second and went to third on a wild pitch. Mason Murray hit a chopper down the third base line. Dallas got off the mound to field the ball and tossed it to his brother Chad Dallas the catcher for what looked like a sure out. Chad dropped the ball, and Youngblood scored to make it 2-1 in favor of the Tigers.
West Orange-Stark got the tying run in the bottom half of the inning. Robertson delivered another one-out single this time to center. He stole second and went to third on a ground out by Tre Bernard who replaced Miller at second base. Jack Dallas then delivered a clutch two-out single to drive home his team leading 14 run-batted-in of the season.
Three infield singles got the Tigers the go ahead run in the top of the seventh. The Mustangs threatened in the bottom of the seventh when with two outs Robertson collected his third hit of the game and Bernard was hit by a pitch. Jack Dallas could not provide the dramatic ending for West Orange-Stark as he hit into a fielder’s choice to shortstop to end the game.
The second half of the district starts Friday. West Orange-Stark (5-1) will travel to Hardin-Jefferson (3-3). The Silsbee Tigers (4-2) are at home Friday against the Orangefield Bobcats (2-4) who beat the Tigers in the district opener. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears (2-4) will try to make it two in a row as they are at home against the winless Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns. The Bridge City Cardinals (5-1) who are tied for first place with the Mustangs will have Friday off. -Dan Perrine, KOGT-
