The Bridge City Cardinals staged a brave comeback in the fourth quarter, however, appeared destined to lose on a late three-point basket by the Orangefield Bobcats in overtime. As the horn was sounding the Cardinals responded with a three of their own to pull out a thrilling 58-56 victory Tuesday night at the Bridge City High School Gym.
The Cardinals took a 55-53 lead with 1:11 left in the overtime on a field goal by their post Hunter Wiegreffe. Both teams had trips down the court without scoring. Bridge City in fact had two free throw opportunities in the final thirty seconds that came up empty.
Orangefield brought the ball down after the second missed free throw with less than 16 seconds on the clock. Aven Lathrop took a pass near the right sideline and found nothing but net with a three-point shot that gave the Bobcats the lead 56-55 with just seconds left.
Inbounding the ball Bridge City got it to point guard Chason Burch who quickly dribbled past mid-court before stopping and popping from the top of the key. Burch’s shot hit the backboard and then ripped the net for a stunning, game ending three-pointer.
The game appeared to be Orangefield’s after three quarters. The Bobcats enjoyed a six-point lead 20-14 at the half and exploded with three-balls in the third quarter. Zach Dischler hit three of them beyond the arc and Lathrop hit one also.
The Bobcats won each of the first three quarters and led by as many as 14 points half way through the third period. A late run in the third period by the Cardinals cut the Orangefield advantage to 38-29 with one quarter left in regulation.
A tenacious defense by Bridge City forced nine turnovers by Orangefield in the fourth quarter. Wiegreffe scored six points to spark the comeback. Burch and Max Baker nailed a pair of three-pointers apiece in the closing minutes including Baker’s second trey that tied the game 49-49 forcing the overtime.
High scorer in the contest was Wiegreffe with 17 points while scoring in every period including the overtime. Baker scored 13 second half points and finished with 14. Burch tallied 13 points with 11 coming in the fourth quarter and the overtime for the Cardinals.
The Bobcats’ leading scorer was Dischler with 15 points. Also, in double figures was Lathrop with 13. Tyrone Wagonner scored 9 points all in the first half on three three-point baskets.
The win was the second straight in district for Bridge City (2-2). Orangefield (0-4) dropped its second straight after leading going into the fourth quarter.
Friday night the Cardinals travel to Silsbee to play the district leading Tigers. The Bobcats play the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns. Both teams are looking for their first district victory.
