Mike and Gwen Poutra have been instrumental over the years in the success and the advancement of the Little Cypress-Mauriceville School District. And now their names will be attached to the school for current and future students to see and hear about their contributions.
Now known as The Mike Poutra LCM Battlin Bear Training Facility. The old gym, sometimes referred to as the Hot Box, has been renovated and upgraded with turf, batting cages, and other equipment to benefit most sports.
Current Athletic Director Eric Peevey said, “Whenever the weather was bad, it was usually bad for all of us (schools in the area) so none of us could practice outside and it was an even playing field. Now, with many having already done what we’re doing here (converting old gyms or constructing new indoor facilities) we can still workout and not miss those important practices and sessions.”
Poutra is a 1968 Little Cypress graduate. The retired businessman served on the school board and booster club for years. In fact he was on the board when the building that now bears his name was built. He became close to the athletic department over the years, helping with fundraising and support.
Gwen worked for the district and was well known as a counselor. The LCM Education Foundation presented Mrs. Poutra with a plaque that will sit in the counselor’s room of the high school.
The Poutra’s sons Blake (β99) and Darren (β94) both graduated from LCM. Darren is an attorney and Blake is a software designer. It was Blake’s donation to the school that made this training facility a reality.
