Vidor Assistant Coach Mike Trahan has been named the new head football coach of the Buna Cougars.
“It’s time and I’m ready,” said the 37 year old about applying for the head coaching position. “I’m thankful to Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Spicer and the committee for the opportunity. And having guys like Coach (Kevin) Terrier and Mark Williams on staff are great resources and both have been mentors to me.”
After a year in Iowa, La. and five in his hometown of Vinton, Trahan has spent the last eight years in Vidor and feels he’s learned from one of the best.
“I learned so much from (former Vidor HFC/AD) Jeff (Mathews). Building relationships, motivating kids, he’s one of the best. And he allowed us to learn what goes on behind the scenes.
As for the Cougars, Trahan meets with the athletes on Wednesday. “We’ll be preaching Relentless Effort, Competitive Excellence, and the Power of Team Unity to the Cougar Football Program. I feel like we’re already off to a good start because Buna is a great community that supports athletics.”
Trahan will be bringing his Slot-T experience to a team that has used the Slot-T successfully in the past. “Yes we will be and we’ll be a little innovative with it. We have to take advantage of the edge.”
With the new realignments announced for the next two seasons, Buna will play in 10-3A Division I with Anahuac, Coldspring, East Chambers, Hardin, Kirbyville and Orangefield.
The biggest change for Trahan besides his new seat behind the big desk is getting to work beside his wife Nikki. She’s the Vidor softball coach who just picked up her 100th career win.
“Yes that was nice that we worked on the same campus together. But sometimes we didn’t get to see each other at all although our offices are 60 feet apart. She’s been super supportive through all of this and I certainly couldn’t do this without her.”
March 18 will be Trahan’s first official day on campus.
