The U.S. Coast Guard early Monday rescued three men after their shrimp boat sank in the mouth of the Sabine River. One of the men was taken by ambulance to Southeast Texas Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The Coast Guard reports a 911 call came about 4 a.m. to the Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders that the shrimp boat Captain Kevin was taking on water. Moments later the New Orleans watchstanders called with a report of an electronic position-indicating radio beacon going off in the same area.
The Houston-Galveston watchstanders launched a 45-foot response boat crew from Station Sabine.
The Coast Guard crew arrived about 4:30 a.m. and encountered a debris field from the shrimp boat, which had sunk. Two men from the Captain Kevin were found on the jetties and a third man was hanging onto a life ring. None of the shrimp boat crew was wearing life jackets.
The Coast Guard restricted traffic on the waterway while the debris was investigated.
