With a packed house Wednesday three Orangefield seniors announced their intentions to play college ball.
Matthew Johnson signed to play baseball at Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi. Johnson started last season about as good as you can before an injury sidelined him for the season. The Blazers are a private evangelical Christian university that participates in the Division III Collegiate Conference of the South. They hired a new coach, Patrick Robey, in June after a 34-15 season. Orangefield baseball coach Jake Nash said Johnson is the leader on the team.
Orangefield softball coach Rebekah Ragsdale held back tears after talking about how special Charlee Sanches and Hallee Becker are to the team.
Slugger/Pitcher Sanches will be going to Weatherford College to play softball. Weatherford is just west of Fort Worth. The Coyotes were 33-15 last season as members of the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference. Sanches has been an All-District performer all four years and also went to Regionals in track.
Leadoff hitter/outfielder Becker also played all four years on the varsity with a table full of postseason honors. She will be a little closer to home at Alvin Community College. The Dolphins compete in the NJCAA Region XIV Conference.
