2018 TREASURE HUNT
–
CLUE 1: Monday; January 29
Believe it or not I was born in Egypt where I learned to throw a baseball very well. As a high school player, I pitched against a major league team in an exhibition game we almost won before my hometown fans. No coincidence I later played for that very team. We had a really whiz bang group of players, but I missed playing in a World Series because my uncle called me to come serve with him. Later when I was traded to my second big league team, I helped them win the pennant and we won the world championship. Who am I?

CLUE 2: Tuesday; January 30
I was born in Oklahoma before growing up in California and was the oldest of my family’s five children. Two of my brothers were good athletes like me. One played college football and was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. Another brother played basketball in college, but is best remembered as an all-pro defensive back for a Super Bowl champion. No buts about it, I am best remembered for being the first African-American to play for the last major league franchise to employee a man of color on the field. Who am I?

CLUE 3: Wednesday; January 31
My hometown is the “Big Easy” where I played on the same high school team as another future major leaguer Mel Parnell. Getting to the big leagues was not so easy especially since I was drafted and served in the U. S. Navy until after the war ended. I finally made it to the majors with a National League club as their starting shortstop where I led the league in errors before they traded me to a team in the other league. That team was very good and set an American League record at that time for most wins in a season. Who am I?

CLUE 4: Thursday; February 1
I am best known by a name that was not the one given to me when I was born. Growing up in the Bay Area, I played for a minor league team there whose skipper would bring me up to the bigs when he got the call to manage in the majors. My years with that famous team were the best of my career which included playing on four World Series Champions. After I retired as a player I became a successful manager for several teams. One of my biggest thrills came when I managed my old team to another world championship. Who am I?

CLUE 5: Friday; February 2
I was raised in California and first played pro baseball for my hometown team as a pitcher and outfielder. I got a call to report to the big leagues when I was only 19 years old which got me the nickname “The Kid” from the club house manager. In my third season I became the last player to do something in the majors. In the fifties I was forced to leave the diamond for a second time. The Reds I faced in Mig Alley were a pain in the neck. My final game at home I hit a pitch over the low fence in right which put me on a pipeline to Cooperstown. Who am I?

Correctly identifying the player will get you closer to the Treasure Certificate. No digging or climbing is required. Access to the prize (an orange colored certificate) is available 24 hours a day. Each days clue will be given at 6am. The prize is hidden somewhere in the greater Orange area (Orange, Little Cypress, Pinehurst, West Orange).
