We started off last week talking about The Masters and a week later those who watched the final round are still talking about it. Maybe the wildest final round of a major I’ve ever seen. Don’t know if I was actually pulling for Rory but glad to witness only the sixth person win all four majors.
The guy on my mind is Jordan Spieth. He’s the guy I was pulling for when he started. But where is he? It’s like he’s getting a pass for the early success in his career. Thought he was the next Tiger (I’ve realized now there is no next Tiger). He should be in his prime at 31 but since 2020 he has won only twice in 118 tournaments. But like we’ve seen so many times, he got paid early. I hope he’ll have a comeback at some point. Which is hard to say at 31.
It was an interesting day on the course for Coach Levi Moore who was in Corpus with one of his golfers for the 2A Regional Tournament. Play had to be suspended because of a naked woman in one of the ponds on the course. Don’t hear that everyday. Coach didn’t have anything to say about seeing her back nine but believe me that story will still be told at those boys 50 year reunion.
Speaking of coaches, a shoutout to LCM Defensive Coordinator John Davis and his wife Sabrina who got married last weekend. It’s a safe bet they’re the first to get married at the 50 yard line of Battlin’ Bear Stadium. Rumors haven’t been confirmed if coach called for an all out blitz during the honeymoon. Wishing you guys nothing but the best!

Don’t know if you saw the obituary on KOGT.com for Eugene Ross Sanders but what an interesting guy and one I didn’t know about.
After attending school in Orange, he was lead guitarist for the Ray Charles Orchestra. He also performed with Bobby “Blue” Bland, Johnny Taylor, Gatemouth Brown, Bill Cosby, and Flip Wilson. I’m hoping to learn more and I’ll pass along.

Our All-KOGT Basketball Team came out this week and I will tell you that when I hang it up I will not miss putting these teams together. Now don’t twist it, I thoroughly enjoy recognizing our athletes. You don’t have to look far on KOGT.com or our social media pages to see that. But putting them together is not easy. I see why the coaches list has become what many say is “watered down” because they have an afternoon to put it together so it’s just easier to include more. We try to limit the number just to be different from them with the hopes of making it mean more if you make the team. Congrats to all!

Got to take pictures while covering the Cowboy Church Rodeo last weekend. They had a good crowd both nights under the roof of their new covered arena. They’re going to have their Easter Service in the arena Sunday at 10:30am if you’re interested and their Trade Days will be under roof next weekend.
But what I wanted to share with you is that you never know what you may pick up in your photos, especially in sporting events, until you go back to the office and look at them because the pace is too fast to do it during the game or in this case, rodeo.
One of the bronc riders was stretched out and trying to stay on and I could see something on his waistband. Zooming in it said…and I’m spelling this correctly…Armachillo. I laughed and then of course had to look them up and they’re supposed to be “cooling” underwear. Did not know about them but may have to try. If the name wasn’t enough, they’re slogan is, “Don’t steam your oysters, put ’em on ice with Armachillo!” That lead me to learning about Green Beaver Deodorant but I’ll go ahead and move on.

Saw an old buddy the other day that many of you may remember. Dan Syphrett was an Entergy representative for Orange County. A man on my list of “smooth operators” is retired and he and his wife Kathy live in Chambers County. He said to tell everyone in the OC hello. Syphrett has the distinction of being the only guy I’ve ever seen hit a ball off the tee and it landed behind him. True story.
Syphrett was on duty when Hurricane Rita hit in 2005 which is the storm that started it all for us (for you newbies and youngins). None of us knew what we were doing and Dan was responsible for all of these linemen coming in to work. I remember helping him unload cases of stuff like socks and Chap Stick. It was a crazy time. I got to ride in a helicopter with Entergy to survey the area and we landed on the green at Sunset Grove CC. Pretty sure we join John and Sabrina in this column as First Timers!
Happy Easter everyone!
