The Orangefield Bobcats used a tight zone defense and a methodical offense to edge the Woodville Eagles, 34-30, on Thursday at Orangefield’s Bobcat Gym in their opening game of the Bill Tennison Memorial Tournament. Orangefield rallied from a first quarter deficit to tie the game at the half.
The Eagles scored to open the scoring in both halves, and took a 17-15 lead at the beginning of the third quarter. Zach Dischler hit his second three-pointer of the game a minute deep into the period to give Orangefield an 18-17 lead.
Christian Williams scored the next two baskets, including a slam dunk, to regain the advantage for Liberty 21-20 with four minutes left in the third. The Bobcats closed out the scoring in the quarter with two free throws from Alex Catt and a beautiful move along the right baseline by Aven Lathrop with 20 seconds left to give Orangefield a 24-21 lead going to the fourth.
Lathrop padded the Bobcat’s lead when he nailed a three-pointer with 5:45 remaining. Dylan Williams got a clutch bucket with 3:27 to play which put Orangefield up 30-27. The victory was all but clinched with Kaden Dubose sinking both ends of one-and-one free throws to make the score 32-28. Dischler and Catt both made one of two free throws to secure the win.
Catt was the high scorer for Orangefield with 11 points. Dischler finished with 7, Williams contributed 6, while Lathrop and Dubose both chipped in with 5 points in the game.
Liberty’s Koby Adams was the game high scorer with 16. The Panthers’ Williams had 12 points including two three-pointers, but twice missed from three-point range in the closing seconds of the game.
The Bill Tennison Memorial Tournament continues through Saturday night at Orangefield. The Boys’ Championship will be at 6:30 Saturday night at Bobcat Gym.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats scored the first thirteen points of the second quarter to break open their game Thursday against the Liberty Lady Panthers. Orangefield won 58-30 over Liberty in its opening game of the Bill Tennison Memorial Tournament in Orangefield.
Emmi Lummus sank one of two free throws with less than four minutes to play in the first quarter to give the Lady Bobcats a 6-5 lead which they never relinquished. Tatum Garlington got the streak started early in the second period with a basket to make the score 16-9. Lummus drained a three-pointer to put Orangefield on top 27-9. Liberty’s Haley Simmons finally got the Lady Panthers on the board before the end of the half with a three-pointer with just 1:30 left in the second.
The Lady Bobcats’ defense kept the pressure on Liberty throughout the game forcing 26 turnovers in the contest. Orangefield opened a 46-18 advantage after three quarters and began substituting starters with players from the bench.
Cameron Choate and Faith Fregia were the biggest contributors for the Lady Bobcats. Choate finished with 18 points and sat out most of the fourth quarter. Fregia added 14 points which included a pair of three-pointers. Lummus also scored in double figures with 10 points.
The Bill Tennison Memorial Tournament continues at the Bobcat Gyms on Friday and Saturday. The Girls’ Championship Game is scheduled for Saturday at 5:00 PM.

Vidor beat LCM in OT 55-53. LJ Deroche had 11 for Vidor and Katon Brown led LCM with 24.
