The City of West Orange established the tax exemptions for the fiscal year 2020 during a meeting of the City Council on Monday. The council approved keeping the same exemptions as used in 2019 for all three categories.
The approved Homestead Exemption will be 20 percent. The Senior Citizen and Disabled Citizen exemptions will both be $17,000.
The Disaster Declaration issued by Mayor Roy McDonald a month ago was extended for another thirty days by the City Council. The mayor indicated the West Orange disaster declaration mirrors the declaration issued by the state of Texas.
A resolution was approved by the council allowing the West Orange Police Department to apply for a Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Program grant. Mayor McDonald said the grant if received will be used by the city to pay for expenses incurred because of the Coronavirus.
McDonald added this would include paying for masks and other protective equipment for the police officers. The grant would also cover some overtime hours used by the police department because of the pandemic. Police Chief Mike Stelly will be the authorized official over the grant.
West Orange joined with ten other local municipalities by denying the rate increase request of Entergy Texas that was filed on March 31. The coalition of municipalities have retained the services of the Austin based Lawton law firm to review Entergy’s rate request and make necessary rate recommendations to the cities.
