Over twenty friends and family members gathered Saturday to pay tribute to John Zerko with the honorary naming of a portion of Peacock Street as Zerko Lane. Zerko a longtime citizen of Pinehurst served almost two decades on the City Council and in other municipal capacities in Pinehurst.
Zerko said Peacock was unpaved and did not even have electricity or water when his family moved there so many years ago. “I remember this road was first dug by a county tractor, and I came along to those crawfish holes and I would stick my hand down in there and catch them crawfish, but I wouldn’t do it now,” Zerko remembered. “It’s just so many wonderful memories of this little street here.”
Those attending the ceremony enjoyed hearing Zerko reminisce about his younger days of fishing in a nearby canal. His momma did not care about his fishing all day as along as he brought back a bucket of blackberries or some fish for her to prepare for dinner.
Pinehurst Mayor T. W. Permenter who went to Panola Junior College as did Zerko commented on the great contributions made by Zerko to his city. Zerko thanked everyone for coming to the ceremony and expressed his appreciation for the naming of that section of Peacock in his honor.
