
On 30 June 2025, Colonel (Dr.) Brian Stancoven retired after 21 years of faithful service to United States Army. A retirement ceremony was held on Ft. Gordon at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center’s Auditorium where he was awarded the Legion of Merit by the Surgeon General of the United States Army, Lieutenant General Mary Izaguirre. His wife, Leslie, received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Chief of Staff of the Army, General Randy George.
COL Stancoven hails from the great state of Texas. After graduating from West Orange-Stark High School, he attended Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and graduated with a degree in Biomedical Science in 2000. In 2004, he graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio’s School of Dentistry and was commissioned under the Health Profession Scholarship Program. His first assignment was at Pulaski Barracks, Germany where he graduated from the US Army Advanced Education (AEGD) in Dentistry 1-Year Program.
From 2005-2007 he was stationed in Baumholder, Germany serving as a General Dentist. In 2007 he deployed to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan for 15 months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he was Chief of Dental Services for the 550 th Area Support Medical Company/Task Force Med, and Officer In Charge (OIC) of the Craig Joint Theatre Hospital Dental Clinic. After his deployment, COL Stancoven started his periodontic residency at Ft. Gordon, GA and graduated in 2011 with a Certificate of Periodontics from the US Army Advanced Education in Periodontics Program and a Master of Science degree in Oral Biology from the Medical College of Georgia.
COL Stancoven was then stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX from 2011-2016 where he was Chief of Periodontics and the OIC of Dental Clinic #3. Then from 2016-2021, he served DENTAC-Hawaii in various roles, including the Periodontic Mentor of the US Army AEGD 2-Year Program, OIC of Na Koa and Schofield Barracks Dental Clinics, Deputy Commander, and Commander of DENTAC-Hawaii. In additional to his roles as a provider and a teaching mentor, COL Stancoven was instrumental in overseeing the $124 million Desmond T. Doss Health Care Annex project on Scofield Barrack.
In 2021, COL Stancoven was selected to be the Deputy Program Director of the US Army Advanced Education in Periodontics and returned to Ft. Gordon, GA. While at Ft. Gordon, he had the privilege of training the next generation of Army Periodontists.
COL Stancoven is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and an Associate Professor of Periodontics at the US Army Postgraduate Dental School. He has lectured internationally on various aspects of periodontal therapy and has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications. COL Stancoven is the recipient of the Surgeon General’s AMEDD “A” Designator and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit. His individual awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (2 oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Award (1 oak leaf cluster), and the Army Achievement Medal (2 oak leaf clusters).
COL Stancoven has been married to his beautiful wife, Leslie, for 24 years. They have three amazing daughters: Stella (18), Elka (13), and Dana (11). The Stancoven family resides in Evans, GA.
