When coaches change jobs it usually requires a wardrobe change as well. Not necessarily the case for Johnathon Snipes as he moves from the green and gold of East Chambers, to the green and gold of the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears.
Snipes is coming to LCM as the new volleyball coach after Rhonda Williams moved over to Aldine Nimitz. “We’re excited to add Coach Snipes to our staff,” said Athletic Director Eric Peevey. “He will be an asset to our volleyball program and our track program.”
Snipes, 39, graduated from Port Neches-Groves in 2001. He and his wife Aubree, who has her own photography business, have three children. Aubree (Eaves) graduated from Bridge City.
He began his coaching career at Hamshire-Fannett and spent 10 years there. He has coached the last seven years at EC. He also spent one year at Orangefield Junior High but he said it was an important learning experience.
“I learned that that is where you start building your program,” he said. “And I plan on continuing that at LCM where I know they’ve been doing that since Coach Castino was here. Our sub varsity program is also outstanding.”
Snipes arrived with LCM completing their Summer Volleyball program where 30 teams competed over two weeks. They held a tournament split into five divisions with the LCM #1 team winning the varsity division.
“Yeh the girls did a great job,” Snipes said. “I also want to thank assistant coach Mackenzie Wittenburg and Coach Lauren Martin who put all that together at the end of the school year.”
Under Snipes the Lady Bucs made the playoffs three out of his four seasons. They missed out last season as they had no seniors on the team. “We were young, and I know you’re only as good as your athletes,” he said.
His track teams at EC also had tremendous success where they won seven straight district titles and four straight area titles.
Snipes, who describes himself as an “old school” coach, will be Coach Becca Peveto’s assistant girls track coach and she’ll be one of his assistants on the volleyball court. “Really looking forward to working with her and all of the coaches. She’s had a lot of success when she was volleyball coach at BC and the Lady Bears had a great track season last year.”
We welcome Coach Snipes and his family. We will post the volleyball schedule when it’s finalized.
