After many years away from competitive fishing to raise his son, Phil Smith of Orange decided to try it again in 2019. His time back on the water has paid off as Smith was named an MLF All-American after finishing fourth at Lake Eufala in Oklahoma last weekend. It also gave him a $3000 payday.
Smith fishes the Bass Fishing League (BFL) under the Major League Fishing umbrella. The BFL is the pathway to fishing other divisions and ultimately the Bass Pro Tour according to their website.
BFL splits the country into eight divisions with approximately 1600 fishermen. Each region hosts an All-American qualifying event and the top six (total 48) qualify. The All-American tournament will be on Lake Cherokee in Tennessee in May 2024.
