Jacob Rougeau, who was shot in the leg Wednesday as he was driving away from a house in Mauriceville, underwent surgery and is expected to survive the injury.
32-year-old Joshua Taylor was arrested in connection with the shooting. He faces charges felony aggravated assault, two counts of felony deadly conduct, and misdemeanor unlawful restraint. Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Hershel Stagner Thursday set a total bond of $177,000.
According to the affidavit of probable cause for the charges, the ex-boyfriend of Rougeau’s girlfriend shot him. The ex-boyfriend had bailed the 35-year-old woman out of jail after she had been arrested in Jefferson County with Rougeau. She had gone back with the ex-boyfriend to his house in Mauriceville.
Sheriff’s Sergeant Jessica Johnnie wrote in the affidavit that after the ex-boyfriend got the woman out of jail, she went with him. The woman told investigators the two argued about their past relationship and her being with Rougeau. The woman said the ex-boyfriend would not let her leave his house.
Then on Tuesday, the ex-boyfriend agreed to drive her to Groves to see her children. However, she was planning to see Rougeau. When the ex-boyfriend discovered she had been texting Rougeau, he pulled his vehicle over in a parking lot in Port Arthur.
She told deputies she got out of the vehicle and the ex-boyfriend grabbed her, choked her and pulled her back inside the vehicle. He then drove them back to his house on Wayne Street in Mauriceville.
Sergeant Johnnie wrote that on Wednesday, Rougeau drove to the Mauriceville house with a friend to get the woman. The friend told the investigator he let Rougeau drive his vehicle because he did not know where to go.
They drove up to the Mauriceville house. The woman ran outside and got in the vehicle. The woman told Sergeant Johnnie the ex-boyfriend carried a handgun in his pants waistband. He followed her to the vehicle. The vehicle backed out of the driveway and started traveling on Wayne Street. The ex-boyfriend fired once at the driver’s side door.
Rougeau was hit in the lower left leg. After driving away, they stopped the vehicle to tie a T-shirt around the wound. They also put a tourniquet on Rougeau’s thigh. They then drove to a store on Highway 12 and called 911.
The 45-year-old Rougeau was taken by medical helicopter to a Beaumont hospital about noon Wednesday. Taylor was arrested a short time later.
