Thursday Orange County held a ribbon cutting on the second of their four precinct POD’s (Points of Distribution). This one is located near Conn Park in Commissioner Robert Viator’s Precinct Four area in Vidor. The Vidor and Orange Chamber and other officials were in attendance.
The 60×80 building with a carport big enough to handle an 18 wheeler for deliveries are self sustaining, including a generator.
The other three are located on MLK, the Orange Co. Airport, and in Mauriceville on Arnel Lane.
“We learned from our weather related events that we needed a building to continue to serve the public with water, MRE’s, etc. We’ve used churches and schools in the past but when they’re ready to get back to business we would have to pick up and leave,” said Judge John Gothia. “If the military is here. They’re not going to pick up and move. They’re going to pick up and go home.”
Some of the PODS will also be used for voting for the same reasons. There may also be other events that can be hosted by the PODS when they’re not in official use.
The PODS were paid for by grants. McInnis Construction did the work.
