West Orange Stark Elementary School has lost one of its favorite teachers.
After a short but serious illness, Ashley Sanders passed away at the age of 47 following a tough decision by her family to take her off of life support on Sunday.
She had an infection that entered her bloodstream and her organs began to shut down. That was followed by a heart attack.
“It’s just tragic,” Superintendent Rickie Harris said. “She was just here with her kids and her co-workers and now she is gone. Words cannot express how sorry we all are to lose Ashley and we send our condolences to her family.”
Harris is letting WOSE students and faculty out of school early Wednesday to attend Ashley’s funeral in Kirbyville. Funeral service will be 2pm at Central Baptist Church in Kirbyville with burial at Kirbyville Cemetery.
She was a 1996 graduate of Bridge City High School and 2002 graduate of Lamar University. She taught the first grade.
Vickie Oceguera is the principal at WOSE, “Ashley Sanders was loved by so many. She was a fabulous first grade teacher, dependable, kind, fun, and deeply committed to our students, our district, and her calling. She had a natural way of connecting with children, setting high expectations because she truly believed every student could reach them. Ashley was more than a friend and colleague, she was someone you could always count on. She never sought the spotlight, but her impact was undeniable. Our students trusted her, and our team relied on her. We will deeply feel her absence, but we are so grateful for the time we had with her. She will truly be missed.”
Ashley is survived by parents, Judy and David Chandler of Pineland, Texas and her nine-year-old fur-baby, Zelda. She was blessed with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, including Jeremy Sanders and family and special friend, Tony Bray and family.
