The Planning and Zoning Commission heard a request on Monday for a second time to establish a RV Park on Cow Bayou at Highway 87. Clint Wise wants to build the RV Park on the property which he said would also include a marina bar and grill, dry boat storage, and a boat ramp in the future.
City Manager Jerry Jones explained why he put the request back on the Planning and Zoning Commission’s agenda after the P&Z denied the request the first time in August. Jones mentioned he did not want the city to lose the estimated $3 million project. “I thought it was advantageous for everybody to at least look at what he had to present, and then we’ll see if we could come up with a way to do it to where everybody would be in favor of it being there,” Jones expressed.
Wise had altered his original proposal by reducing the number of RV spaces from 30 to 26 and adding a washeteria on the property. He stated as he did back in August he needs multiple sources of revenue to help pay for the high price he is paying for the property from the Houseman Company.
Tammi Fisette serves on the City Council in Bridge City and was the only citizen to speak on the request during the meeting. She was against the request just as she was in August. Fisette indicated she had received numerous calls from citizens opposing the RV park at that location. The commission denied the request again, by a vote of 6 to 2, with only David Gauthier and Judy LeBlanc voting for the RV park.
The Commission did approve calling for a joint public hearing with the City Council. The joint hearing will be held to review a zoning change for property in Orangefield Farms. The owner wants to have a change from single family residential to second commercial. The owner Juan Ceja has indicated he may build townhouses on the property. No date was set for the public hearing.
Several members of the commission were sworn in at the start of the meeting. Lou Raburn, Kim Davis, and Judy LeBlanc were reappointed. Newly appointed members were David Gauthier and James Fisette.
At the close of the meeting, Commission member Louis H. Davis announced he was bowing out of public service and would step down from the P&Z in December. Davis had previously served on the City Council in Bridge City.
