Robert Hill (Bob) Cummings, 93, of Austin and a longtime resident of Bridge City, Texas, passed away at the Isle at Cedar Ridge in Cedar Park, TX, on September 25, 2022.
Bob was born in Fort Totten, Long Island, New York, on April 7, 1929, and graduated from Clinton High School in Clinton, SC. Bob was born to Alexander Hill Cummings and Celeste Lauve Cummings. Bob’s Dad was a Colonel in the U.S. Army, and they moved often during his childhood. He met and married Joan Shepherd in Port Clinton, Ohio, before moving to Texas in 1952.
Bob and Joan enjoyed dancing at the Pompano Club in Groves, TX and continued dancing in Austin well into their 80’s.
Bob was an avid reader and storyteller of his Father’s adventures in China and Burma, and the family lived at the Presidio Army Post in San Francisco while the San Francisco Bridge was being built. Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, Rob and Chris, shrimping, and playing tennis through the years. Bob built their home in Bridge City and also built a boat as well.
Bob was employed as a laboratory supervisor in the Lab at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in Orange, Texas. He retired at age 62 and enjoyed 30 years of retirement.
A private celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on October 7, 2022, at Beck Funeral Home in Cedar Park, Texas. Burial will be in Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Barbara Boynton and husband, Charlie of Orange, Texas; son, Robert Cummings and wife, Michelle of Austin, Texas; daughter, Leigh DuBose and husband, Ben of Austin, Texas; and son, Chris Cummings and wife, Michele, of Golden, Colorado; sister, Mary Lou Carlson of Billings, MT, sister-in-law, Marilyn Schafer of Chandler, AZ; and sister-in-law, Synnie Cummings of Ft. Myers, FL.
Grandchildren are Ryan Skinner and wife, Chelsea of Orange, TX, Cody Trahan and Patrick Wirt, of Gloucester City, NJ, Alex DuBose of Austin, TX, Andrew DuBose of Austin, TX, Jason Cummings of Golden, CO, Kara DuBose of Austin, TX, Kelly DuBose of Austin, TX, Hannah Cummings of Austin, TX, Austin Cummings of Austin, TX, Ashley Cummings of Golden, CO, Justin Boynton and wife, Jessica of Bridge City, TX, Jared Boynton and wife, Brittany of Manvel, TX, and Jordan Boynton and wife, Tiffany of Manvel, TX.
Great Grandchildren are Cace Skinner, Halle Skinner, Reece Skinner, Hudson Boynton, Logan Boynton, Leo Boynton, Addison Boynton, Ellia Boynton and Avery Boynton.
Bob was preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife of 72 years, Joan Shepherd Cummings, parents, Alex and Celeste Cummings, brother, Bill Cummings, son-in-law, Leroy Trahan, brother-in-law, Chet Schafer, and granddaughter-in-law, Brandi Skinner.
We thank his many caregivers at the Isle at Cedar Ridge, especially Darla, Christina, Anah, Mary, Denise and Arica; as well as the excellent care he received from Resolutions Hospice in Cedar Park.
