Marv was a combat veteran of the Korean War and was with the 101st Airborne Division when his son Mark was born at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. Marv was later in the NY Reserves and Guard, and then in the Texas Guard where he received a direct Commission as Captain and appointed as Bn. Chaplain. Marv was retired from Allied Chemical Corp. in 1987 as a manager with 33 years of service. Following his retirement, Marv founded the Southeast Texas Veterans Service Group in 1988. At the time of founding, Marv was chaplain of American Legion Post 49, VVA chapter 348, VFW 2775, The Retired Officers Association, and the Texas State Guard. Marv and his wife left the group after 20 years of devoted service.
His primary ministry was to military veterans, but he ministered to everyone he could. Marv served as a Chaplain at burial services for thousands of Texas and Louisiana veterans since the late 1960s. He was very active in the ministry of St. Paul Episcopal Church, the VFW, American Legion, VVA, Korean Veterans of Southeast Texas, The Golden Triangle Chapter of the Military Officers Association (formerly TROA), the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Alumni Association, LifeShare Blood Center – Beaumont, and the Texas Chaplains Association. Marv served as Chaplain for most of these organizations and was the American Legion Chaplain of the State of Texas for the years 2004-2005. He was selected as Texas Chaplain of the Year in 1990, 1991, and again in 2001. He was selected as Officer of the Year of the 208th M.P. Bn. of the Texas Guard in 1990. He had received many other awards for his service including the Lifetime Achievement Award for volunteerism from President Bush, The Jefferson Award in 2007. Marv and Arlene also received the Tears from a Grateful Heart Award from the 1st Nazarene Church of Orange, and a special award from the Southeast Texas War Museum Association, and countless others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary Crouse, sisters, Evelyn Beebe and Elva Grillo; brothers, Norman, Eugene, and Wilfred; his beloved mother-in-law, Joyce Jones; and sister-in-law, JoAnn Wallace.
Marv leaves behind temporarily, his loving wife, constant companion and personal angel, Arlene Howland, of Orange; son, Mark Edward Howland, of Orange; daughters, Malinda Livingston, of Orange, Suzan Frank, of West Orange, Melissa Riehle, of Mauriceville, Mary Mesloh, of Hemphill, and step-daughter, Brandi Works, of Beaumont; and special adopted daughters, Pam Cheek and Lanie McClain. Marv also had 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Marv appointed as honorary pallbearers- all area ministers, funeral directors, doctors, nurses, law enforcement officers, judges, journalists, veterans, and co-workers that Marv’s life was enriched by during his long ministry. Marv said his life was filled with more love and support than any man could desire or be entitled to.
Marv wanted everyone to share in his joy of graduating to his new and higher level of everlasting life and asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to St. Paul Episcopal Church Memorial Fund (1401 W. Park, Orange, TX 77630) or to The Texas Military Honors Team (P.O. Box 22599 Beaumont, TX 77720).
He was a hero – to many. A good friend to my Dad, Jack Davis, for which I will be ever grateful. Thank you for your service, Sir.
Mr. Howland you truly lived what you believed. I was blessed to know you as my sisters father in law. I do not think you ever met a stranger. You were always so kind to me. You will be missed, but we will see you in Heaven.
I never had the pleasure of meeting this exceptional man but I know he was so kind to my daughter, Erin King, and she loved him very much. Your family is in my prayers while you struggle with this loss.

I was honored to have been a friend of Marv and his dear wife Arlene for many years. Marv once told me that every morning when he awoke, he prayed that God would give him strength to help someone that day and that he did. I pray for his family during this time of grief as this was a great loss for his family as well as the community, including the many veterans in our area. I thank you for your service in the military and all the hours you spent helping those in need. May you now RIP.
God Bless. Clara Fults
