Reverend Dr. James Edward Thompson
(1929-2023)
On April 29, 2023, Reverend Dr. James Edward Thompson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his residence in Georgetown, Texas, at the age of 93. Born on November 23, 1929, in Texarkana, Texas, James was the beloved son of V.P. “Tom” Thompson and Lorene Wilson Thompson.
James, a man of deep faith and unwavering commitment to the United Methodist Church, devoted more than 45 years of his life to ministry and spiritual leadership. He held degrees from Texas Christian University, and a Doctorate from Wiley University. As a minister and district superintendent, James touched countless lives in East and Southeast Texas, fostering a sense of community and spiritual growth among those he served.
Beyond his calling, James found joy and solace in life’s simple pleasures. He cherished moments spent boating, fishing, and after his retirement, discovering a newfound love for golf. James was a beacon of light in the lives of those he loved, leaving behind memories that will forever be treasured.
James is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Mary Ann Miller Thompson of Georgetown, Texas, and their children: Terri Ann Estes of Georgetown, Texas; Thomas “Tommy” Thompson and wife Tana of Orange, Texas; and Matt Thompson and wife Angie of Lake Charles, Louisiana. He also leaves behind a rich legacy in the form of eight grandchildren, Travis Estes and wife Kristin, Todd Estes and wife Jana, Wade Estes, Tayler Leggett and husband Zach, Tiffani Wilson and husband Steven, Tara Guidry and husband Hayden, Tad Thompson and wife Maggie, Ty Thompson and wife Sydney and six great-grandchildren, Luka, Mia, Ansley, Miller, Brady and Daisy who will continue to be inspired by his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering love.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and son in law, Richard Estes.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation from 12:30pm to 1:00pm, followed by a memorial service at 1:00pm on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at Ramsey Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas. A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at Hillcrest Memorial Garden Cemetery in Texarkana, Texas. Cremation services were entrusted to Ramsey Funeral Home.
As we gather to honor and celebrate the life of Reverend Dr. James Edward Thompson, let us remember the lives he touched, the hearts he warmed, and the souls he helped guide. He will be greatly missed, but his spirit and memory will live on in the countless lives he enriched during his time on this earth.
