
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 19 businesses or restaurants with food during January and none had perfect scores. The Taco Bell on North Main Street was the highest with a 98.
The lowest score was an 82 for the Subway on Highway 12 in Vidor. Scales cited “lots of cleaning and organizing needed” and said the ice machine had “heavy mold.” In addtion, the hand-washing station did not have hot water.
He also made three inspections with no scores. Those were for Little Pirate Learning Center in Vidor after the business got a new owner. The Crawfish Hole in Bridge City got a pre-opening inspection, and New Beginniz in Orange had a re-opening inspection.
The businesses, scores and demerits are:
Subway, 3030 Highway 12 in Vidor: 81. Foods were stored incorrectly inside the reach-in cooler with meats above the vegetables. Inspector pulled expired products from the cooler. Heavy mold was in the ice machine and employees need a cleaning schedule. The hand-washing sink had a slow drain. Employee did not have a hair restraint. Lots of employee foods and drinks were stored improperly inside coolers and freezers. Coolers and storage equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. Current health inspection report and certified food manager certificates were not posted in front.
Whataburger, 540 North Main Street in Vidor: 83. Inspector closed restaurant on January 18 for a few hours until hot water service could be repaired. Products inside coolers needed to be covered and dated. Dishes were not sanitized. Floors inside the walk-in freezer needed to be repaired. Wiping cloths were stored on the prep table. Vent-a-Hood was not working properly and needed to be repaired. Current food service permit, health inspection report, and certified food manager certificates were not posted in front.
Stars-Petro Plus, 1955 MLK Drive in Orange: 88. Foods inside coolers needed to be covered and dated. Name and address of store needed on bags of ice being sold. Wiping cloths were on prep table. Drinks and foods were stored on floors. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. Light shields were needed in storage room and above drink station. Crates and old posters were stored outside next to dumpster and needed to be disposed.
Sunset Grove Country Club, 2900 West Sunset Drive in Orange: 88. Inspector found several boxes and containers of molded vegetables like lemons and tomatoes. Several containers of prepared foods were expired and molded. The sanitizing bucket was on a prep table near fryers. Expired food products were not discarded. Personal items were on a prep table. Boxes of food were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of a grease builld-up. Floors needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Broken and unused equipment needed to be discarded. Inspector also cited old grease containers outside the back door, handles stored up on untensils, Coke products were out of date, and certified food manager certificates were not posted in front.
Donut Palace, 1875 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 88. Sausage and boudin were not at proper temperatures. Store did not keep records of holding times for sausage and boudin at room temperature. Mop sink and floor drain were stopped up. Dates were needed on products. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector found rubbish, trash and old equipment throughout the store.
Chili’s Grill and Bar, 292 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 89. Inspector found several cleaned dishes with old foods still stuck. Some foods had expired dates. Shelves were rusted. Boxes of food were stored on the floor in the walk-in cooler. Vent-a-Hood , inside coolers, floors and walls throughout restaurant needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. Current food service permit and certified food manager certificates were not posted in front.
Texas Country Store, 7411 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 91. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Drinks were stored on the floor inside walk-in cooler. Outside dumpster area needs to be cleaned of old trash. Storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Paper towels were needed in employee restroom. Broken and unused equipment needed to be repaired or thrown away.
On Your Way Valero, 3030 Highway 12 in Vidor: 91. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Drinks were stored on floor inside walk-in cooler and storage area. Light shields were missing. Ceiling tiles were missing. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned. Lots of trash and old equipment found stored outside. Current health inspection report not posted in front of store. Inspector recommended store implement a cell phone policy for food service workers. He said the score does not reflect the condition of the store.
Lom’s Seafood, 2507 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 93. Foods inside freezers needed to be covered. Store did not have a certified food manager on staff. Back storage room and outside areas of store needed to be cleaned and organized. Inspector found lots of construction material and equipment being stored outside.
K-Dan’s Super Foods Deli, 9604 FM 105 in Orangefield: 93. Pipes under the three-compartment sink were dripping and needed to be fixed. The bottom of the walls inside the three-compartment sink needed to be re-sealed. Water from the middle sink was draining into th third sink. Fryers, storage equipment, floors, walls and air vents needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease.
K-Dan’s Super Foods, 9604 FM 105 in Orangefield: 94. Inspector found slime inside the ice machine. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Boxes of food were stored on the floor inside walk-in freezer.
Pizza Hut, 1720 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 95. Hot was was off at the three-compartment sink. Front cooler motor was dripping water inside bucket on the top shelf. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. A missing Vent-a-Hood needed to be replaced near ovens. Plumbing throughout the restaurant needed to be repaired.
DuPont Cafeteria/CBS Catering, 2739 FM 1006 in Orange: 96. Kettles were dripping water at base. Walls and ceiling inside back storage room had peeling paid. Walls at Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. Old equipment and ice machine needed to be discarded.
CBS Catering at DuPont Cafeteria: 92. Cut chicken pieces were not at proper temperature. Proper sanitizer was not being used. Employee food and drinks were improperly stored in cooler, freezer and storage shelves. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods. Old equipment needed to be disposed.
