August has been proclaimed Recycling Awareness Month in several cities in Orange County. Two of the strongest proponents of recycling are Sandra Cash and Sandra Hoke who are affectionately known as the “Trashy Ladies” for their continuing efforts to Keep Orange County Beautiful.
Cash and Hoke have spoken at city council meetings and at the Commissioners Court meeting this month. They are promoting cutting back on the garbage put in trash cans that eventually end up being taken to the county landfill. The alternative is recycling.
At a recent council meeting in West Orange the two ladies brought a full bag of garbage and then took items out of that bag that could be recycled. When finished with the demonstration there were only two Styrofoam items that needed to be put in the garbage can.
Hoke pointed out recycling greatly reduces her weekly garbage. “I keep expecting the garbage man to stop at my door and thank me but he hasn’t that my can is so light. We did not inherit the Earth from our grandparents, we’re borrowing it from our grandchildren,” Hoke reminded.
The “Trashy Ladies” have worked to get a commercial company out of Utah to perform recycling in Orange County. Recyclops charges a fee of $12.99 a month for curbside pickup every two weeks of recyclable items and provides the bags to hold the items. Currently 326 households in the county are using the service. To sign up just go to the KOGT.com website and click on the Recyclops icon.
