A state of the art recreation center will be built in the City of Orange where the former city natatorium is currently located.
N&T Construction was approved by the Orange City Council Tuesday, April 13, as the contractor to build the $2.9 million dollar facility on Orange Avenue. City Manager Mike Kunst said the first action is to demolish the natatorium. “It’s kind of time to move onto the next chapter,” Kunst explained.
The decision to build the recreation center has been in the works for about two years even before Kunst became the city manager, but he believes the new rec center will be a positive step forward for the City of Orange. “The mayor and the rest of the council and all of us are excited because again we think it’s going to provide opportunities for not only our young people, young adults, but the entire community to have a place to go to do some physical activity, and hopefully provide positive alternatives,” Kunst assured.
Expectations are the facility could be completed and ready for use in about six months. All building projects in southeast Texas though are dependent on the weather especially with the approach of hurricane season in a couple of months.
Contractors N&T Construction stipulated in their paperwork how long it would take them to complete construction of the center. “What they put in their bid is 180 calendar days, so if the weather cooperates and despite the crazy world that we happen to live in with pandemics and those kind of things, but could be six months so maybe by the end of the year.” Kunst concluded.
