Deborah Harris Biography:
I am an Army Veteran originally from Detroit, Michigan. I am married to a retired Army officer, the proud mother of two sons, 3 dogs and one “stray” cat. Prior to my husband’s retirement from the Army, we established residency in Helotes, Texas after being stationed in 7 different states or countries. Though I have created art and sewn most of my life, my focus on fiber and quilting began over 20 years ago. I use my skills to portray stories of the past, as well as an expression my thoughts regarding cultural and current events. I am a founding member and current president of the African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio, a non-profit organization established in 2017. My current piece, “Edward 5 Scalps Rose” is one of the many pieces currently touring with the exhibition, “Black Pioneers: Legacy of American West.” I also have a second piece on tour, “American Legacy” with the exhibition, “We Who Believe in Freedom”. Both curated by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi. In February of this year, I had my first solo exhibition, Thoughts In Fiber, where 16 of my pieces were displayed at St. Philip’s College (San Antonio Texas), the first Historical Black College in Texas. I enjoy experimenting with different art techniques and designing fabric. For me, it keeps my style fresh and shows an evolution in my process (or at least my willingness to try something new). Currently, I am working with another artist helping a community to capture their history on quilt blocks, while working on a personal piece incorporating several different techniques.
