Last year when Orange County Commissioners Court raised the tax rate, angry citizens crowded into the meeting room for a public hearing. No increase is planned this year and no one has appeared to speak.
The court Friday morning held its second public hearing and no citizens came. The tax rate is staying at 54.2 cents per $100 valuation. Property values overall decreased because of Tropical Storm Harvey damage, so the county will raise less money with that rate. County Judge Dean Crooks said the county will used reserve funds, or savings, to make up a budget deficit.
Another public hearing on the budget will be held Monday evening at 6 on the proposed budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year.
The court will vote on the budget and tax rate during its regular weekly meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Meetings and the public hearing will be in the Commissioners Courtroom at 123 Sixth Street.
