The West Orange City Council ordered on Monday the municipal election to be held on Saturday, May 5. Three at-large alderperson positions will be on the ballot.
The positions of Mike Shugart, Shirley Bonnin, and Dale Dardeau expire in May. Shugart was not able to attend the meeting Monday, and Dardeau indicated he has not decided if he will run for another term on the City Council. Bonnin has made up her mind on whether to seek another term as alderperson, and said she wants to continue serving West Orange.
The City Council unanimously approved West Orange participating in the coalition of cities served by Entergy Texas Incorporated in matters concerning rates with the Public Utility Commission of Texas. This is an annual step taken by all the cities in Orange County.
Public Works Director Mike Stelly concluded the meeting by informing the council of road work planned by the Texas Department of Transportation that will close FM 1006 known as Chemical Row in about a month. TxDOT will be replacing the catwalks going into Dupont. Stelly said TxDOT does not know exactly when the construction will start, but it will take 10 days including weekends. A detour will be arranged using Irving Street, Western Avenue, and Foreman Road.
Later in January will be School Choice Week. The City Council recognized the week of January 21-27 as that special time in the City of West Orange.
