Orange police have been going to some businesses to give letters explaining the Texas laws on gaming machines like 8-liners. Police Chief Lane Martin said the police department has received a few complaints about stores giving money for winning at the gaming machines. Gambling is illegal in Texas and is a Class A misdemeanor under the penal code. The punishment is a fine up to $4,000 plus up to a year in a county jail. The state allows gaming machines to be used “solely for amusement” with non-cash prizes, toys or novelties. Chief Martin said some store clerks may not know about the statutes. “We want to make sure everybody is fully aware of the law,” he said.
