The Vidor Pirates high-powered offense was too much for the Montgomery Bears as Vidor secured an opening night victory to start the 2018 football season.
Vidor defeated Montgomery 42-14 at Pirate Stadium in Vidor on Friday night courtesy of a rushing attack which churned out 499 yards on the ground, led by running back Zach Dahlenberg’s 240 yards on just 11 carries.
Dahlenberg and the Pirates set the tone early scoring on a 50 yard dash up the middle on the third play of the game for an early 7-0 lead over the Bears.
Vidor’s defense held Montgomery to a three-and-out and set the offense back up in good position. However, after another huge 61-yard sprint by Dahlenberg, the offense sputtered and turned the ball over on downs.
After another three-and-out by the Bears, the Pirates offense went back to work. Starting with great field position at the Montgomery 45-yard line, Vidor needed little time to pad its lead as Zach Seigrist scooted through the left side of the line for a 6-yard touchdown.
Dahlenberg added a 52-yard scamper midway through the second quarter and a 28 yard scoring run in the third quarter to help propel Vidor (1-0) to an opening night victory.
Pirates running back Brad Nunez showcased his speed as he ran around the left end and down the sideline late in the third quarter for his only score of the night. Nunez finished the night with 136 rushing yards on 14 carries.
The Pirates offense was far from precise on opening night as the team left points on the field, so to speak, as several drives stalled in the red zone. Two drives ended with the ball being turned over on downs, one ended due to a fumble and another ended in a missed 33-yard field goal.
Montgomery (0-1) will host Barbers Hill next Friday, while the Pirates have an early bye-week. Vidor will host Conroe Caney Creek on Sept. 14.
