Coach Prouse Scouts Chilton
The year 2020 has had plenty of history made in it and there are still seven weeks to go in this memorable year. The Deweyville Pirates made history November 12 with the school’s first win ever in football during the post season.
Deweyville’s Head Coach Brandon Prouse knew coming into this season it might be something special for his Pirates. Deweyville stepping down to Class 2-A, Division II would be a big factor for a successful year for the Pirates.
Going undefeated in district the Pirates were district champions thanks to a very strong defense. “We’re just getting a little faster and a little more physical every week. They’re trusting us, they’re trusting their reads, and they’re just getting to the ball extremely quick, and it’s giving other teams a hard time to move the ball against us,” Prouse reminded.
The Pirates whipped the Cushing Bearkats 44-8 in the opening round of the state playoffs. The win avenged a loss for Deweyville to Cushing in the first game played this season.
Two seniors Cade Watson and James Menard proved to be leaders for Deweyville in the lopsided win scoring all six Pirate touchdowns. Watson had 24 carries for 239 yards with two rushing touchdowns. Menard scored four touchdowns and rushed for 56 yards.
Coach Prouse said the Pirates were especially motivated to play well considering the opening opponents were the Bearkats who ruined Deweyville’s goal of going undefeated during the regular season. Prouse praised his Pirates, “With a lot of work, a lot of read, a lot of discipline, they got off the bus, and they were ready for the re-match, and they took care of business.”
The second-round playoff game will be a battle of Pirates between Deweyville and Chilton. Prouse analyzed the Chilton Pirates who do quite a few different things on offense. Chilton operates out of the Spread, out of Double Tight Ends, and from a Dead T set.
Chilton will get into the Shotgun with the double tight look and use three running backs with a quarterback in the backfield. Chilton does a variety of things offensively with the football.
The Chilton Pirates like to run the quarterback sneak a bunch and have used at least three different players at the quarterback position. Most frequently junior Mckeller Cook is the quarterback and goes under center to get the football. Cook runs the sneak the most of the trio of Pirates’ quarterbacks.
The problems facing the Deweyville defense against Chilton are the number of formations Chilton runs and their size which is much bigger than Deweyville. “That will be our challenge this week of making sure we’re lined up to everything they do, and we’re hoping that we can get off blocks to get to the football to make things happen quickly,” Prouse evaluated.
Defenses are all important as the playoffs progress. Coach Prouse pointed out the Chilton Pirates play out of an odd-man front and are led by a big stellar defensive front line.
At noseguard is Jose Gonzales for Chilton. Gonzales is big with quick feet and gets off the ball very well. Deweyville may have to double team him. Gonzales will also play the five technique.
Moving between the defensive line and linebacker Anson Jones is another defensive stalwart for Chilton. Jones can take advantage of opponent’s double-teaming Gonzales and make penetration into the backfield.
The Chilton secondary has a number of skilled players including Daylon Cromer who is also a top receiver for the Pirates. Prouse predicted, “We’ve got our work cut out for us as far as moving them to move the football, we’ve just got to make sure we have our personnel in the right spots.”
Few experts have given Deweyville a chance to get this far, so Prouse believes his Pirates will continue to play with a bit of a chip on their shoulders and will surprise others, but not themselves with their play on Saturday. “They want to prove everybody wrong that they are for real and to quit counting us out and to start giving us a little bit of credit for the hard work that they’ve put in and the talent that we have over here that’s overlooked,” Prouse concluded.
The Deweyville Pirates play the Chilton Pirates in Tomball. The kickoff will be at 6:00 PM on Saturday. KOGT will broadcast the game live.
