The Vidor Pirates celebrated its first home game of the season on the new turf of Ivan Croak Field at Pirate Stadium with a 48-0 whipping of the Caney Creek Panthers on Friday night.
The Pirates asserted their collective will on the Panthers, both offensively and defensively, from the outset and never looked back as the Vidor offense amassed 429 yards on the night, while the defense secured five turnovers, including one for a touchdown.
After Caney Creek turned the ball over on downs, Vidor only needed two plays to reach the endzone as Zach Seigrist went 66 yards around the left side for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead following the Danny Lee extra point.
Vidor then recovered the onside kick and only needed 1:59 to score again as Cree Simmons went 23 yards through the Panthers defense for the touchdown.
Both teams traded possessions and Caney Creek appeared to be starting the move the ball, that is until Vidor defender Gage Galloway pulled the ball out of the grasp of the Panthers running back and streaked 43 yards down the left sideline for another Pirates first quarter touchdown, which made the score 21-0.
Following a Caney Creek punt, the Pirates offense took charge once again and moved the ball 83 yard in 3:13 for another touchdown as Brad Nunez scored from the 7 yards out to make the score 27-0 at the half.
The Pirates used quick scoring strikes in the first-half, but utilized a ball control offense in the second-half to chew up the clock. The Vidor defense did its part too as it limited Caney Creek to just three possessions in the second-half for only 3:55, while the Pirates offense had four possessions for more than 20 minutes.
Vidor’s Seigrist scored on a 12 yard run in the third quarter, while Simmons scored on a 13 yard run on the following possession. David Petersen added a score on a 1-yard plunge on Vidor’s third possession and backup quarterback Ty Vincent ran out the clock for the victory.
The Pirates defense stuffed the Caney Creek offense all night as it only allowed the Panthers to gain 79 total yards on the night with the longest gain of the night being a 16-yard pass play from Panthers quarterback Isaiah Mendoza to receiver Cody Palmer in the first-half.
Meanwhile, the Vidor offense gained 429 yards on the night and three backs broke the century mark. Brad Nunez gained 128 yards on 17 carries, while Zach Seigrist gained 116 yards on just 9 totes with the longest run of the night of 66 yards. Cree Simmons carried the ball 16 times for 105 yards.
Vidor (1-1) will host the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears (1-2) in its final non-district contest next Friday. Caney Creek (1-2) will be off next week.
