Brandon Prouse is entering his second season as the head football coach at Deweyville. Last season he changed the culture and work ethic for the Pirates which now has the weight room more involved.
Coach Prouse has starters back for Deweyville on offense. The Pirates are going to hang their hats on their big right tackle Nathan Henson who has started three-years. Henson will move from center to right tackle. Landon Thompson replaces Henson at center and started ten games last year. Prouse praises, “That’s a big plus for us.”
Ty Collier is a junior and started ten games last season. He will be the tight end this year. Lance Wilhelm played half back last year and is being moved to fullback. Prouse has made another change at quarterback where Keevin Gordon will take that role after returner Nate Buxton moved out of the district.
The Pirates are in Class 2A which means there are a lot of two-way players according to Prouse. Junior Dillon Fears will step in as a linebacker for Deweyville and should do a great job there.
Deweyville had more depth last year in linemen. Chase Williams will move around and play in both the offensive and defensive lines as well as some inside linebacker. Prouse advises, “Keevin Gordon will for sure sub at free safety.”
There will be some new faces and at least one familiar face on Friday nights playing for Coach Prouse and the Pirates. Two years ago, Kaden Stoma was Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore, but transferred to Little Cypress-Mauriceville last season. Stoma has moved back to Deweyville and is looking really good. He will take over at outside linebacker and tailback.
Coming out for football is Cameron Hand the drum major for the band. He should help the Pirates at cornerback. Cade Watson will play defense at the other corner spot.
With less than two weeks before the start of the season Prouse the offensive line as the biggest question mark because of graduation from last year. Prouse has young men at every position and they seem to be picking up the blocking schemes well. The coach states the linemen are moving quickly and may be a little more athletic than last season’s group. Prouse hopes they get a little confidence in time for the district games.
Deweyville competes in a tough district. San Augustine is the favorite ranked number six in the state and Groveton always puts a strong team on the field. Coach Prouse anticipates a tight race for claiming a playoff berth in the district. “Overall I think the district is going to be very competitive. I think anybody can take the district championship, should be exciting down to the wire,” Prouse predicted.
