The Deweyville Pirates rebounded from their first loss of the season two weeks ago with a decisive victory last week over Galveston O’Connell. This week the Pirates play the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats.
Deweyville Coach Lance Dale says the Bobcats run a similar offense to the Pirates. Hull-Daisetta runs it offense from a Wing-T set and will feature many of the same plays Deweyville uses also from the Wing-T. The Bobcats according to Dale vary their formations up. They have two very good running backs in Brandon Maughan and Dalton Robinett.
Hull-Daisetta uses a defense which Coach Dale is very familiar. The Slanting Monster 50 Defense is the same defense Dale learned when he played football in high school at Hamshire-Fannett. Appropriately, the Bobcats’ defensive coordinator is Jarrett Thibodeaux who was Dale’s teammate in high school. Hull-Daisetta’s defensive line and linebackers are really good and are well coached by Thibodeaux. Dale observes, “His linebackers read well.”
Friday’s game is the final game before the start of district in three weeks for Deweyville. Coach Dale gives the final preparations for the Pirates this week against the Bobcats. Turnovers were a key last week when the Pirates intercepted four passes; and that will be a key again as Deweyville hopes to avoid fumbles and interceptions. Dale points out this week the Pirates need to tackle and prevent Maughan and Robinett from getting outside with their speed. The Pirates need to make plays.
It will be homecoming Friday night for the Deweyville Pirates when they play the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats. The kickoff will be at 7:30 PM. The district games begin October 7 at home against Groveton.
