The Deweyville Pirates got off to a slow start but finished strong with a 50-37 win over the Iola Bulldogs Monday at Cleveland High School.
In a game broadcast live on KOGT, the Pirates had a hard time finding the basket and we’re getting beat on the boards. “Maybe it was because we haven’t played in eight days,” said Head Coach Brandon Prouse. “I don’t know but I had confidence they would turn it around.”
After being down 8-5 after one, the Pirates took their first lead with 3:14 left in the half. James Menard hit a free throw to give Deweyville an 11-10 lead. They would outscore the Bulldogs 15-8 to take a 20-16 lead at the half.
The Pirates came out in the second half playing hard, with key three’s from Justin Brister and Noah Watson. They built a 14 point lead before Iola’s Coby Sechelski got hot in the fourth quarter. He had nine points and cut the lead to single digits several times before the Pirates put them away making free throws down the stretch.
Menard once again had a solid game inside the paint with 21 points. Cade Watson added 10 including 5-5 free throws. Noah Watson and Justin Brister had 7 each.
The Pirates (16-2) play Schulenberg later this week. They defeated Thorndale Tuesday night.
