An opening win is a great way to start the season for the Deweyville Pirates. Coach Lance Dale reflects on the first week of the season for Deweyville as being a good one. The Pirates level of play was much more intense than in the previous scrimmages. Dale adds that if the Pirates continue to work hard they should be getting better as the season goes on.
This Friday the Pirates travel to northern Newton County to play the Burkeville Mustangs. Coach Dale analyzes the Burkeville offense. The Mustangs are based out of the Wing-T and are primarily a running team. Their tailback is really good with good speed which highlights the team speed Burkeville possesses. “The Mustangs like to use ball control and that is how they attack you on offense,” Dale informs.
The Mustangs are led by their secondary on defense according to Dale. They use an even front on defense, basically a 4-3. Dale points out that one of the three Burkeville linebackers is used to help in pass coverage situations. The positive thing for the Mustangs on defense is their athletic secondary.
The Pirates are looking to go 2-0. Coach Dale provides the keys for Deweyville to stay undefeated. They have to do a better job of holding on to the football after the Pirates left the ball on the ground a couple of times last week when they were close to scoring. Penalties are always a problem early in the season and Deweyville needs to cut those out as well.
The coach emphasizes his catch phrase “Do Your Job” as the primary key for the Pirates to achieve their goal of making the playoffs. Dale states, “It’s not about winning the first game of the season. We’re going to take it game by game, week by week and hopefully by the end of the season we can achieve our goals.”
