The old saying is, if life gives you lemons then make lemonade. The City of Pinehurst is doing that with a frequently flooded property that was acquired as part of a buyout program with FEMA.
The requirements of the buyout program prohibit any permanent structures to be built on the property. The result is the city is required to mow the grass on the property regularly while allowing it to become only green space.
Pinehurst City Administrator Robbie Hood explained the city is turning the property the city acquired at Park Avenue and 33rd Street into a dog park. Fences outlining the dog park have already been erected.
Plans for the dog park include a check in area where the dog’s owner will show that their pet has all its shots. The park will then be divided into two areas, one for medium sized to large dogs and the other for smaller dogs.
Hood indicated the dog park will be open to everyone in the greater Orange area and will be free to all dog owners to use. There will be activity areas for the pets to exercise on and plenty of space for just walking. Hood said Pinehurst expects to open the dog park to the public in mid-September.
