Orange County has had problems with its gasoline credit cards recently, and the City of Pinehurst has been looking for different credit cards to purchase gasoline as well. Pinehurst City Administrator Robbie Hood said their problem with Shell Oil was customer service related.
The problem for the City of Pinehurst was receiving the proper cards for its employees. Hood indicated the issue was getting cards issued from Shell that did require pin numbers to be put in to acquire fuel so that the city could track fuel purchases better. The city administrator said Shell was called repeatedly to get information and have the situation fixed. Hood said that problem was finally resolved.
Another problem was the limited locations of using just Shell fueling stations and not any of the fueling stations in Pinehurst. Hood is looking to alternative credit cards to expand the locations his employees can get fuel. Hood is considering a fleet program card that will allow one card to be used at a multitude of fueling stations including Murphy Oil, Shell, Chevron, and several others. He thinks it will be a positive experience for his employees not to be tied down to one fueling station.
Hood concluded Shell the current card provider does offer Pinehurst discounts for using their credit card just like it does Orange County. The discount is based on a large volume of fuel purchases. Orange County uses a much larger volume of fuel than does Pinehurst so the discount would not be as significant for the city.
