The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon announced that 32-year-old Raychyl D. Philmon, the mother of an 18-month-old toddler who died of suffocation, is now in the Orange County Jail on two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
Investigator Janois Grizzaffi said Philmon is a “person of interest” in the death of her son, Raydyn Jones of Mauriceville.
The mother brought the unresponsive toddler to the now-closed Baptist Hospital-Orange Emergency Room Monday afternoon. Orange first responders did CPR. The mother told them she had been sleeping with the boy and had rolled over on him.
The child was taken by Acadian Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he was declared dead. An autopsy in Beaumont determined his death was a homicide by suffocation with signs of child abuse.
Grizzaffi said Philmon will be arraigned on Saturday and a bond will be set. Sheriff’s office detectives are continuing to investigate the child’s murder.
