Paul Leon Hughes, 63, of Orange, Texas passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025 in Houston, Texas at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his loved ones.
Paul was born in Moses Lake, Washington on February 20, 1962, to Pat and Mickey Hughes.
Paul was a 1980 graduate of Little Cypress- Mauriceville High School where he ran track and played football. Paul was an exceptional athlete. He was proud to be a union man and he worked as a millwright for many years.
Paul had an adventurous spirit and lived his life to the fullest. He was a generous, fiercely loyal friend and he always found a reason to laugh.
Paul had a deep affection for music. He attended concerts that most of us could only dream of. Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, Crosby, Stills and Nash to name just a few. His concert ticket stubs are a sight to behold. His taste in music varied from rock and roll to the blues to progressive metal. He once said that if he had to choose between losing his sight or losing his hearing, he would choose his sight because he could not imagine never hearing music again.
Paul was also an avid Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys fan. On any given game day, rest assured, he would be in his recliner directly in front of the television. Paul was not hesitant about letting you know quickly to keep the chit chat outside while the game was on. He had a deep-seated loyalty and a passionate, sometimes intense, game day preparation for both teams.
Paul was preceded in death by his father, Mickey Hughes. He is survived by his mother, Pat Hughes of Orange, Texas and brother Mark Hughes of Orange, Texas. He is also survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and many friends. Paul was loved and he will be profoundly missed.
A memorial service will be held Friday, October 17, 2025 at the First Baptist Church in Mauriceville, Texas, 11540 Highway 12. A gathering of friends and family will begin at 10:00 am and the service will begin at 11:00 am.
