Dr. John E. Phelps, 83, passed away peacefully at home on June 4, 2025, after a brief but fierce illness. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rebecca; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Stephanie; his daughter and son-in-law, Kristina and Christopher Robinson and his two grandchildren, Misha and Zachary. He is also survived by three sisters, two sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. John was born on March 6, 1942, to Maxine Junior and Woodrow Wilson Phelps in Birmingham, Alabama. Another Case Of Arson
Fire was set to a storage building behind the former Entex/Centerpoint office on Thursday. That building is located in the 1800 block of Strickland. The call came in just before 2pm as ESD3 responded and put out the fire. It is believed the fire was deliberately set as there was no power to building. Over the last several months there have been a handful of fires in the area believed to be suspicious because of the same circumstances. Whether it's the same person or not is under investigation.
