The Military and Social officers of the OHS Sophisticats attended the American Dance and Drill Team officer camp in Rockwall, TX this past week and learned many leadership and bonding skills to help this year’s team be successful. A.J. Martin a resident of the West Orange community passed away on Sunday June 2nd 2024. Born in Lafayette Louisiana on November 4th 1939 he moved to Texas after serving in the United States Navy. A.J. served 6 years in the Navy, 4 years in the Reserve and 2 years active duty. As a young man his active stint included time aboard the USS Mississinewa (A0-144) during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The USS Mississinewa was a fueler providing fuel to ships that made up the Naval Blockade of Cuba. Later deployments took him to Italy where he visited as many places as he could. Those of us a little longer in the tooth can remember the Wide World of Sports phrase from Jim McKay who said, "the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat." I thought about that many times after the Orangefield Bobcats season came to an end to the Franklin Lions Saturday in the Region III Final. by Sheriff Robert Burby NEWTON 3rd ANNUAL HORSE CAMP 2024. We held the 3rd Annual Newton County Horse Camp on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024, at the Newton County Fairgrounds. This was a three-day camp for youths 8-16 Years of Age. The focus of our camp is to provide life skills and safety awareness. The kids engaged in activities such as grooming, feeding, leading and riding horses while being supervised by trained professionals.
