Tropical Storm Bill went into the central Texas coast with little effect on Orange County. Tides ran about two feet above normal on Sabine Lake, affecting the rivers and bayous. The Sabine River Authority gauge on Pier Road in Orange had the Sabine River at almost 3.5 feet above sea level. Flood level is 4 feet above sea level. The rise in water covered some low-lying areas but no widespread flooding was reported. Heavy rains and gusting winds came and went during the day as outer bands from the storm hit the area. St Mary Reunion
St. Mary Catholic School was honored to host a part of the 1965 class reunion. Alumni and their significant others participated in a weekend filled with activities that brought this class together. Groppel Leaves BC
Dr. Lance Groppel, Bridge City High School Principal, has accepted an administrative position in the Grapevine/Colleyville District in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Dr. Groppel will continue working as the BCHS principal until his replacement is hired and through a transition period this summer. BC Garbage
Garbage pickup was the main order of business for the City Council Tuesday evening in Bridge City. The threat of Tropical Storm Bill caused Republic Services to cancel its garbage pickup on Tuesday. Republic’s Operations Supervisor Brad Burkhalter spoke to the city council about the decision to cancel garbage services for a day. Life Skills Gets Surprise
Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Life Skills teacher Terrie Parker got a big surprise recently. Victoria Crossan, who just finished tenth grade, delivered a $50 check for LCM’s Team Force, which is the name under which the Life Skills students participate in Special Olympics events. According to Parker, “LCM Team Force would like to give a big shout out and thank you to Victoria Crossan. BC Takes House Down
Bridge City is going to take action on the request of a couple that spoke to the City Council this week. Bob and Marie Bonnin said the house next door to their home in the 2300 block of Beverly has been condemned for seven years since Hurricane Ike and has weeds head high in the yard which poses a hazard for their grandchildren playing in their yard from rodents and other creatures. They pointed out that the structure has not been occupied since Ike except by a transient and occasionally boys that go inside to smoke. LCM Students Pass
Three Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School students who took the Microsoft Office Word 2013 certification test passed and will receive their MS Word 2013 Certification. Malisa Vincent, Tyler Ridgaway and Tyler Wolfford are the first Information Technology Academy students in the Career and Technology Department to take the test. During the upcoming fall semester, these students can begin working on another of Microsoft’s Office Suite applications, including Excel, Powerpoint and Access. Commissioner’s Vote
Commissioners Court voted for the third time in two weeks whether to change the health insurance for retirees over the age of 65 from Blue Cross Blue Shield to County Choice Silver Plan offered by Texas Association of Counties (TAC). Monday’s vote was split 3 to 2 in favor of changing to TAC’s Count Choice Silver Plan which was said would save the county over $219,000. County Judge Brint Carlton said the vote last week was only temporary and gave his reason for seeking another vote of the commissioners Monday.
