Paul Spears, 74, of Mauriceville, passed away Monday, July 6, 2015 at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont, Texas. Born on January 3, 1941 in Deweyville, Texas to his parents, Nolan William Spears and Grace (Fountain) Spears, he lived in Mauriceville since 2005 and he lived previously in Crystal Beach. He worked as a process operator at Honeywell in Orange. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Deweyville. Dead Gator Was Woodward’s Killer
A dead 11-and-a-half foot alligator was found Monday afternoon on the boat ramp at Burkhart's Marina where a man was killed by a large alligator during a swim at 2:30 in the morning Friday. The gator had a large hole in between its eyes from a gunshot. No one claimed to have killed the alligator. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens were at the marina and referred questions to a supervisor. Authorities Search For Arsonist
The Orange fire marshal was meeting with the Orange police Monday morning to discuss three fires at vacant buildings within about 30 hours during the weekend. Two of the houses were two-stories tall and in the Old Orange Historic District. The first was reported about 4:45 p.m. Saturday at the corner of West Cypress Avenue and Sixth Street (above). The second fire at Eighth Street and Sholars Avenue was reported about 10 p.m. Sunday. The Commissioners Court Monday morning approved a $10,000 deductible for insurance to cover public officials and county law enforcement officers. County Judge Brint Carlton explained the need for the insurance is to protect the public officials. Judge Carlton said the insurance is through the Texas Association of Counties and provides insurance in case public officials are sued for something such as sexual harassment, discrimination, and wrongful termination or insurance against suits filed on law enforcement officers because of use of excessive force or wrongful death. According to Dr. Terri Estes, Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Principal, students from Mauriceville Middle and Little Cypress Junior High Schools are participating in LCM Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Camp. Gator Killed
Sparky Robinson and Weldon Smith with OPD stand next to the gator believed to be responsible for killing Tommie Woodward Friday near Burkhart's Marina in the Cove. Witnesses say Woodward was attacked by a large gator of about 11 feet. The gator in the photo measured 11-5 and was found dead near the marina. No one has claimed the killing of the gator. Another Vacant House Fire
Sunday night just after 10pm, Orange Firefighters responded to a fire on 8th Street at a vacant home that had already been burned. Following their arrival another fire was reported, this time at the former Heaven Serenity location, a two story structure at 1207 W. Park. Firefighters were slowed in their arrival by a train but they would be in a defensive mode when they arrived because the fire was already out of hand.
