Longtime Business Man Dies
Grady Johnson, former Mayor of Pinehurst as well as longtime businessman, passed away Monday, August 10 at the age of 90. Johnson owned Johnson's Convenient Mini Storage and before that ran Johnson's Plumbing and Butane, and Johnson's Enterprises. He also owned several strip centers in the Pinehurst area. He did so much in and for the city that KOGT referred to him as the "Governor" of Pinehurst. Originally from Center, Texas, Johnson served in the US Army. Johnson Caught Again
At approximately 5:00am on the morning of August 10, Officers of the West Orange Police Department, Pinehurst Police Department and Orange Police Department responded to an alarm call at the Simoniz Car Wash on MacArthur Drive in West Orange. Upon their arrival, 48 year old Robert Dale Johnson was found by Officers in the parking lot of Simoniz. Burglars Caught, Released
Orange police have been busy answering calls about burglaries and thefts during the past two weeks. Officers caught two juveniles and an adult in the process of breaking into an apartment about 1 Monday afternoon. However, they were released because the resident of the apartment did not want to press charges, according to Detective Captain Cliff Hargrave. A neighbor called in the burglary at the complex on Cherry Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets. The Commissioners Court was possibly going to reconsider funding the Orange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Monday. Commissioner Barry Burton attended the EDC’s board of directors meeting in place of County Judge Brint Carlton last week. Burton said he was encouraged the EDC might be saved by accepting some suggested changes to its structure until news from the Orange County Port District Monday that it was going to cease funding to the EDC. A 45-year-old woman sustained multiple injuries Friday morning after the SUV she was driving rolled over at a curve on FM 1130. Orange Patrol Officer L.T. Holland reported that Stacy Lee Tuttle was taken to Baptist Hospital Orange Emergency Room by Acadian Ambulance. According to Officer Holland, Tuttle was driving a Kia Sorrento southbound on FM 1130 about 9:30 a.m. When she reached the curve at Dewitt Lane, the SUV veered off the road. Wiffleball Humbles Baseball Players
The Annual Wiffleball Tournament at First Financial Field was this weekend in Orange. Handling the daytime heat was to some, as difficult as hitting the white ball with holes in it. Jack Dallas, one of the organizers of the event, said wiffleball can make even the good baseball players look bad. Creating somewhat of an equal playing field and some fun. Teams from the Triangle and one from Houston participated in the event. Yak City defeated Sha Beb in the finals 3-0.
