LCFD Gets Big Sales Tax Check
The Little Cypress Fire and Rescue Department will soon be losing the sales tax income from the International Paper containerboard mill. But a large check this month will help cover operating expenses for a while. The Texas Comptroller's Office reports Orange County Emergency Services District No. 3 is getting $251,351 in sales taxes this month. The ESD governs the Little Cypress fire department. The monthly payment to the ESD is $6,121 less than the month's payment to the City of Orange and is more than the cities of Bridge City and West Orange combined. Police visit stores about gaming
Orange police have been going to some businesses to give letters explaining the Texas laws on gaming machines like 8-liners. Police Chief Lane Martin said the police department has received a few complaints about stores giving money for winning at the gaming machines. Gambling is illegal in Texas and is a Class A misdemeanor under the penal code. The punishment is a fine up to $4,000 plus up to a year in a county jail. The state allows gaming machines to be used "solely for amusement" with non-cash prizes, toys or novelties. 2015-16 Texas Hunting, Fishing Licenses Go on Sale Saturday Sportsmen gearing up for the upcoming fall hunting seasons are reminded to renew their licenses for 2015-16, available starting Saturday, August 15. The current year Texas hunting and fishing licenses (except year-to-date fishing licenses) will expire Aug. 31. Swing Bridge Opening Soon
A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Friday morning, August 14, at 8:00 in Bridge City to celebrate the completion of construction on the swing bridge for Texas Highway 87 over Cow Bayou. Sarah Dupre with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) said the reconstruction project of the historical swing bridge began in January of 2014, and had the northbound traffic on Highway 87 transferred to share the adjacent bridge with southbound traffic.
