No citizens commented during the public hearings on the budget and proposed tax rate for Bridge City Tuesday evening. Next year’s budget has been increased by a little over 11 percent from this year’s. The tax rate was increased to 49.92 cents per 100 dollars value for next year. Later during the City Council meeting the budget was approved by a unanimous vote of the members attending the meeting. The Council will vote on approving the tax rate at its meeting on September 15. City of Orange will change water deposit October 1 Orange will be revamping city deposits for water and sewer service beginning October 1. The deposit for service will go up from $100 to $125, but people who have service shut off won't have to come up with an extra $100 deposit to have the service turned back on. The deposit will not be refunded until service is ended to the address. City Council agreed in a workshop to change the deposit system. City Finance Director Gail English said if someone has service cut off, the policy has been to double the deposit to $200. Only one of 11 food businesses got a perfect score for inspections during the first two weeks of August. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales also gave seven scores in the 90s and three in the 80s. Fresh Prep on West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City received a 100 score. The lowest score was an 81 and went to On Your Way Valero on Highway 12 in Vidor. The demerits there included barbecue sandwiches and sausage links found at unsafe temperatures. Carrie Woliver with the "Save The Depot" Project has scored her first item for the depot's museum.  Woliver said her and a friend discovered the brass spittoon with the Union Pacific logo at a resale shop in Houston and she purchased it for the downtown Orange location.  She also said there is a Museum Committee that will be surveying the public and asking for memorabilia that has to do with railroads, petrochemicals, timber and shipbuilding, for the exhibits in the museum.   The Friends of the Orange Depot are still taking donations and bricks can still be purchased from their website … [Read more...] about Museum Needs Memorabilia
